Schönbrunn Palace

This staggeringly grandiose palace of the Habsburgs’ has almost 1,500 rooms, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is the epitome of imperial opulence. A vision of baroque symmetry, the fine state rooms display wonderfully rococo interiors and the residential apartments have elegant 19^th century furnishings. The palace is surrounded by magnificent gardens, intricately regimented in a formal French style.

St Stephen’s Cathedral

This mighty Gothic cathedral stands watch over the city of Vienna and shelters a rich collection of artistic treasures. Constructed over centuries, the cathedral’s amalgamation of Gothic spires, Renaissance details and Baroque features is crowned with colourful chevron-patterned tiles which shimmer like scales on its roof. Climb the steep spiral steps up the South Tower for an astounding view over this beautiful city.

Belvedere Palace

This exquisite palace was built as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy, and today functions as a wonderfully baroque art gallery. The Upper Belvedere is home to many important examples of Austrian art from across the ages, and it also has an unrivalled collection of work by Gustav Klimt. Across the flawless ornamental gardens, the apartments and state rooms of the Lower Belvedere reflect an aristocratic splendour.

Hofburg Imperial Palace

The sprawling Imperial Palace of Hofburg is one of the world’s largest palace complexes. Begun in the 13^th century, it served as the centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the early 20^th century, and was also a Habsburg imperial residence. Today, this grand complex forms a Viennese empire of culture, homing many museums and exhibitions including the important world-class Kunsthistorisches Museum, the rococo private chambers of the last of the Habsburgs and the classic Spanish Riding School.

Museum Quarter

Vienna’s Museum Quarter is a vast collection of cultural institutions, ripe for intellectual exploration. Everything from historic architecture to contemporary design is represented, with exhibitions on fine art, architecture, music, fashion, theatre, dance, literature and subcultures, ranging from the classic to the contentious. Highlights include the Leopold Musuem, a showcase of historic masterpieces, and MUMOK, a modern art museum tracing the development of the avant garde in Vienna.

Vienna Woods & Mayerling

The wonderful forested highlands of the Vienna Woods form a protected reserve which serves as the city’s ‘green lung’. As well as sheltering a wealth of wildlife, the gentle slopes provide a wonderful natural landscape to explore. The Vienna Woods are home to the Heiligenkreuz Abbey, famous for its singing monks, and the infamous hunting lodge of Mayerling, inspiration for the tragic ballet Mayerling following the mysterious deaths of Crown Prince Rudolph and his mistress in the 1890s.
