Monschau

Germany

Medieval marvels and grand Gothic architecture

The small town of Monschau sits in the beautiful nature park of High Fens, surrounded by impressive mountains and verdant valleys. As the cultural centre of the Eifel mountain region, this is a hugely popular tourist location, and for good reason. You’ll be utterly enchanted by the romantic half-timbered houses that sit within the ancient walls of this charming medieval town, and there’s nothing more magical than the Old Town at Christmas time, with glittering lights, stalls selling wonderful wares, and the delicious aromas of tasty food and comforting drinks. If excellent Gothic architecture and spectacular scenery are what your group is after, then look no further than Monschau.

Attractions:

Bad Münstereifel

A truly memorable part of this trip is driving through the scenic Eifel National Park, where you can take in the unspoilt and remote countryside that makes this one of the most beautiful areas in Western Germany. The romantic and historic spa town of Bad Münstereifel contains historic houses within its 13th century walls, and is one of the few towns in this region to have medieval ramparts still intact.

Cologne

Teeming with an impressive range of historic buildings that are interspersed with quaint streets, Cologne makes for an excellent day out. Touring the city, you’ll see the exquisite cathedral, which is renowned as a monument of Gothic architecture and has been a World Heritage Site since 1996. Explore an interesting array of museums in the city, covering everything from art and Roman history, to sports and chocolate. There’s a fabulous range of shops, and plenty of places to enjoy some excellent food and drink.

Alternatives

Aachen

Not far from the beautiful hills of Eifel, Aachen has a history that stretches back millennia. Known to the Celts & the Romans for its hot springs, it then enjoyed brief political prominence in the early Middle Ages when it became the capital of Charlemagne’s empire. Today, it’s a vibrant spa town with a lovely historic heart, and its splendid cathedral was Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Valkenburg

The little town of Valkenburg in The Netherlands makes a great place to stop for a visit whilst driving through continental Europe. Riverside houses, quaint bridges and historic streets give Valkenburg an idyllic charm, and the romantic castle ruins overlooking the town add to its enchanting image.

Rursee Boat Trip

A cruise on the beautiful lake of Rursee in the Eifel National Park is a great way to experience the sweeping views of the surrounding scenery. The electric boats glide quietly across the water, ensuring peace and tranquillity.
