Highly ornate, this imperious 15th century monastery in Belém is one of the must-see sights of Lisbon. Delicate Gothic details, elaborate portals, Renaissance carvings, and majestic pillars form this breathtaking construction, built following Vasco da Gama’s first journey to the Far East. The monastery’s grandeur is a celebration of the wealth that Portugal’s golden age of exploration brought.
Imperiously looking out over the Atlantic, the Belém Tower symbolises Lisbon’s maritime heritage and guards the harbour entrance. This bold fortification is an iconic Lisbon landmark and affords wonderful ocean views.
The outstanding Gulbenkian Museum hosts one of the finest collections of classical art in Europe. Donated by the Armenian philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian, this wonderful collection is home to thousands of pieces dating from antiquity to the early 20th century, including Hellenic vases, Chinese porcelain, and paintings by Rembrandt, Monet and Van Dyck.
Dating back to the 11th century, the bold crenellations of this Moorish fortification stand proudly against the Lisbon skyline, visible from almost every street. This majestic castle offers unparalleled views over the city, and the joy of exploring it comes with taking the vintage tram through the ancient, winding streets of the Alfama district which twist up to Lisbon’s medieval pinnacle.
